Dr. Gourav Banerjee

Dr. Gourav Banerjee is an observational astronomer presently working as a Post Doctoral Fellow at the prestigious Indian lnstitute of Astrophysics, Bangalore and is stationed at their Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur. His area of research is study of a special type of stars using spectroscopy.

Dr. Banerjee has completed PhD and MPhil in astrophysics specialization, both from the CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, India. A life member of the lnternational Astronomical Union, Astronomical Society of India and Indian Physical Society, he also has an M.Tech in Astronomy and Space Engineering from the Manipal University, Karnataka. Involved in astronomy popularisation activities since over a decade, Dr. Gourav has delivered over 500 popular astronomy talks across the nation. For reaching to the larger mass, he has also authored two books on popular astronomy, 1. 'Becoming an Astronomer', which is the first book published in India that provides the details of how an Indian student can pursue astronomy as a career; and 2. 'Mars: a celestial show's topper', which tells the exciting true story about how by studying a single celestial object humanity's knowledge about science and technology has progressed for over 2000 years. Mr. PAOLO FERRI

Paolo Ferri is a former Head of Mission Operations at the European Space Agency (ESA). He is known for his significant contributions to ESA's space missions, particularly in the areas of mission operations, spacecraft management, and flight direction. He has played key roles in missions like EURECA, CLUSTER, Rosetta, and Venus Express.

Born in Milano, Italy, on 3 September 1959, he received his degree in Physics in 1984 at the University of Pavia, Italy with a thesis in theoretical plasma physics applied to nuclear fusion. 1984 he joined ESA’s Science Directorate as a visiting scientist, working as duty scientist at the EXOSAT Observatory, located at ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. He moved to the field of mission operations engineering, joining ESA’s Operations Directorate, in February 1986. He worked as Spacecraft Operations Engineer on the EURECA microgravity mission, then as Spacecraft Operations Manager for CLUSTER, a 4-satellites scientific mission to study the Earth’s magnetosphere and its interaction with the solar wind and for Rosetta, the first space mission to rendezvous and land on a comet’s nucleus. 2006 he became Head of the Solar and Planetary Mission Operations Division, in charge of the operations preparation and execution for all ESA missions in the Solar System, including Clusters, Ulysses,Rosetta, Venus Express, Mars Express, ExoMars, BepiColombo and Solar Orbiter. As part of this role he was Flight Director of Rosetta. He also supported, in the role of Flight Director, in 2005 the launch and in 2006 the Venus arrival operations of Venus Express and in 2009 the GOCE mission to study the Earth’s gravity field.
